A RING, AN AUNT, AND A FIRST KISS

“WHO SETS AN alarm during summer vacation?” Caly had asked the night before.

“I don’t want to miss my first ocean sunrise,” I said, setting my alarm to take a sunrise walk on the beach. Caly decided she would rather sleep longer.

Nana said it was the best time to enjoy the beach. The peacefulness was amazing. The ocean’s waves lazily lapping the shore, the wind tinkling the palm tree leaves, and an occasional bird calling all played a quiet symphony of calm. From this beach, both the sunrise and sunset would be spectacular. Twinkling sand ran a couple miles long, with the large dock stretching out into the deeper waters. Bypassing the smaller dock, I went straight to the larger one. Two yachts were parked on either side with their sterns backed up to the farthest end. Each had several decks above water level, and helicopter propellors were visible on two. They were so beautifully maintained that they looked new. Leaning on the rail at the end of the dock, I stretched out my energy to see all the creatures. Even though there were sharks, it was comforting to notice that none were nearby.

It was interesting to observe calm waters on our side of the dock and rolling waves on Annette’s side. The anomaly could be the lay of the land, magic, mechanical means, or maybe a combination of each. Near our house, the beach stretched out into the ocean, making a hook shape at the end of the cliffs. There was a walking path that went to the top of the hill. I looked at the smaller dock and noticed a few nice fishing boats and Jet Skis in the calmer waters. Annette’s side of the beach also had land that stretched into the ocean, but not as far.

Returning to the sand, I paused to study the pavilions. One had picnic-style tables underneath, and the other had four large cabana beds with side tables. Each pavilion had speakers in all four corners. Both had fans that hung down from the ceiling, and a misting system lined the edges of the roof.

A low rumbling noise drew my attention down the beach where something was cleaning the sand with a huge rake. It looked like a lawn tractor with an attachment being pulled behind. It was nice to see it wasn’t running on fossil fuels. The house servants had done an excellent job of cleaning up from last night’s parties, but this machine was sifting the sand and collecting even small objects that were missed. As it passed, it was clear that no human was driving it. On the side of the tractor was lettering stating property of the City of Redding. That couldn’t be right. This beach was private. Only beach residents and guests were allowed. It reeked of Annette’s meddling. Her moral compass wouldn’t see anything wrong with manipulating the city into providing beach maintenance.

I walked behind the tractor in the fresh lines of cleaned sand.
